Shore
Shore - a photo book
Shore - a book created as part of the Shore Life project selected for the exhibition "To Shine a Light | Who Dared to Dream " at the Royal Photographic Society 2024.
Abstract images created with found objects from the sea shore, along with words written by the author and photographer, Caroline Fraser.
21cm x 21cm. Soft cover. Perfect bound.
The book ‘Shore’ is a component of a larger project 'Shore Life' based on the sea shore and salt marsh at Rye, East Sussex.
The effects of local sewage spills, the fishing industry and day trippers to the sea shore are evidenced. The images are made using multiple layers, both in-camera and using the digital darkroom. I photograph the objects that I find, and then collect them for disposal. Items found include waste from sewage plant discharges, ghost fishing gear ( discarded fishing line and rope), plastic cups, plastic cutlery, plastic bags, beach shoes and other picnic waste.

Why books?
Making artist books is a fundamental part of my art practice. Presenting images alongside text allows me to fully express my sense of place and space . Books allow storytelling; an unfolding of thoughts and feelings using the time that is spent in turning pages. Books allow for reflection and a gathering of elements that say so much more together than they are able to say apart.
High quality papers and environmentally sound materials are essential elements of the work. The words tend to be minimal and poetic. The choice of structure and layout of content in a book is a key element of the work.
My hand-bound books use a variety of bindings and covers. Choosing the materials to complement the content takes time and much experimentation.
The completed books are available in small editions, as creating each book involves many hours of work.
